Phone number lookup

Check a mobile or landline number: whether it is valid, its country and type, the operator it was first issued to, and how to write it for any country. The number stays in your browser.

Type a number to see what it tells you.

What the number says

Country, type, operator and formats appear here.

What no number can tell you

  • Where the phone is now. Only the mobile operator knows, and it tells only the police. A site that claims to track a number is showing where the number was issued, or guessing.
  • Who owns it. Subscriber records are not public.
  • The current operator. Numbers are moved between operators without changing.

How does a phone number lookup work?

Every country publishes how its numbers are built: how long they are, and which leading digits mean mobile, landline or toll-free. Operators are given numbers in blocks that share their first few digits. This page compares your number with those public rules and blocks. It does not contact the phone, the operator or any directory.

Can I track a mobile number’s location?

No, and no website or app can. A phone’s position is known to its operator’s network and is released only to law enforcement. What “mobile number tracker” tools show is the region or operator the number was first issued in, which stays the same wherever the phone travels. To see where someone actually is, they have to share their location with you themselves.

What do the formats mean?

International
The country code and the number, spaced for reading. Use it when the person calling may be abroad.
National
How the number is dialled inside its own country, with the leading 0 where one is used.
E.164
A plus sign and digits only, at most 15. The form to store in a database or pass to an SMS or calling service.
Link
A tel: address for a web page link that starts a call when tapped.

Which countries are covered?

Validity, country, type and formats work for every country. The original operator is available for India, the United Kingdom, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and Australia, and the area for Indian landlines. The tables come from Google’s open libphonenumber project.

Is the number sent anywhere?

No. The number is checked in your browser and never leaves it. For the countries above, the page downloads that country’s table of operator blocks from this site, which shows only which country you looked up. This page loads no ads.
