About Kernel Tools

Kernel Tools is an independent website of practical tools for documents, code and money. It started as Kernel DevTools, a browser extension for web developers, and grew into the free tools on this site.

What you will find here

Every tool is built to do one job well, without sign-ups, watermarks or upload queues. The collection currently includes:

Alongside the website there are a few dedicated products:

Kernel DevTools
A browser extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox that adds more than 30 developer tools to the browser’s DevTools panel.
Kernel API Tester
An HTTP client for VS Code that keeps requests in plain files next to your code.
Kernel Split
Shared expenses for trips and households, with no account needed.
Kernel Business
Billing, stock and accounts for small businesses, the one paid product on the site.

How your files are handled

Most tools process your files and figures inside your browser tab. PDFs, images, spreadsheets and calculator inputs are not uploaded to our servers, and nothing is kept once you close the page. Each tool says on its own page whether it works locally.

A few features need a server because they are shared between people or devices: Kernel Split groups, group polls, shared lists, event invites, live location links, one-time secret links, multi-signer sign requests, the optional source-text job in the PDF Editor, and Kernel Business. The privacy policy explains exactly what each one stores and for how long.

How the site is funded

The free tools are paid for by advertising. Pages with a written guide, such as the PDF tools and finance calculators, can show Google ads and sponsor banners. Pages where you enter personal data, the games, Kernel Business and our policy pages show no ads. Kernel Business is funded by its subscriptions. Advertisers can book sponsor banners on the Advertise page; they never get access to your files or data.

Who builds it

Kernel Tools is designed, written and maintained by an independent developer. The same developer publishes the Kernel DevTools extension on the Chrome Web Store, Microsoft Edge Add-ons and Firefox Add-ons. There is no investor or parent company, and there are no data partnerships.

Calculators follow the published rules they name, such as RBI loan-to-value limits or the Income-tax Act slabs for the year shown. They are estimates for planning and not financial, tax or legal advice.
