How the resume check works
The file is opened in your browser. Its text is read in the order a parser meets it, the layout is checked for the things that make applicant tracking systems (ATS) stumble — scans, two columns, text boxes, tables, icon fonts and contact details hidden in the page header — and the text is read back into fields: your name and contacts, the sections under standard headings, and the jobs, dates and bullet points within them.
The score is the same 100-point rubric the resume builder uses, so a resume fixed there scores the same way:
- Readable by ATS (25) — Contact details found, standard headings, recognisable dates, and a single-column layout with real text — no scans, text boxes or contacts hidden in the page header.
- Content impact (30) — Bullets with numbers, strong action verbs, no filler phrases, sensible length.
- Completeness (15) — The sections expected for your stage, with dates, and no unexplained gaps.
- Length and format (10) — Word count for your experience, consistent dates, a few bullets per role.
- Language (10) — Varied verbs, active voice, consistent tense, no shouting, common misspellings.
- Personal data (10) — No ID numbers; date of birth, religion and similar only where expected.
It is a guide to common recruiter and ATS advice, not an employer’s screening result: every company configures its system differently.
The score is a writing guide, not an employer’s screening result. Your file is read in your browser; it is never uploaded or saved.
About Resume Checker
Most large employers and many Indian companies screen applications with an applicant tracking system (ATS). It pulls the text out of your file, looks for your name and contact details, splits the rest into sections by their headings, and reads jobs, dates and skills into a database that recruiters search. A resume that reads well to a person can still come apart in that step — a two-column layout read straight across the page, contact details in the page header that the parser skips, a scanned PDF with no text at all.
This checker opens your PDF or Word resume in your browser and shows the text in the order a parser meets it, and the fields it can find: name, email, phone, location, links and each section with its entries and dates. It checks the file for scans, two columns, text boxes, tables, icon-font symbols and length, then scores the resume out of 100 with the same rubric as the resume builder: readability, content impact, completeness, length, language and personal data.
Paste a job description to see which of its skills and repeated terms your resume does not mention. When you are ready to fix things, one click opens what was read in the resume builder, where you can edit every section, pick an ATS-friendly template and download a new PDF or Word file.
How to use it
- Choose or drop your resume: a PDF or a Word (.docx) file.
- Read “What an ATS reads”. Anything missing or out of order there may be missed by an employer’s system too.
- Check the file checks and the score, worst problems first.
- Paste a job description to see the missing keywords.
- Choose “Fix this in the builder” to edit it, then download a corrected copy.
Good for
- Checking a resume made in Word, Canva or another builder before you apply.
- Finding out why an application portal filled in your details wrongly.
- Comparing your resume with a job description before tailoring it.
- Turning an old PDF resume into an editable one.
Limits and privacy
- The score is a guide based on common recruiter and ATS advice, not the result of any employer’s system; each is configured differently.
- Reading a resume back into fields is a best guess. Review every section after opening it in the builder.
- Scanned PDFs can be read with on-device OCR, which is slower and less accurate. It shows what the resume says, but most ATS cannot read scans, so export a text PDF instead.
- Old .doc files are not read; save them as .docx or PDF first. Files up to 10 MB and 10 pages.
- Your file is read in your browser and is never uploaded or saved.
Questions
Is this ATS resume checker free?
Yes. Checking, the score, the job match and opening the result in the resume builder are free, with no sign-up.
Is a PDF or a Word file better for ATS?
Both work when the text is real and the layout is a single column. Send what the job posting asks for; some Indian portals, including Naukri, recommend Word.
Why does my two-column resume score lower?
Many parsers read straight across the page, so lines from the left and right columns are mixed together, and jobs, dates and skills end up in the wrong fields.
Why is my contact information not found?
It may be in the page header or footer, in a text box or written with icons only. Many ATS skip those; put your email and phone as plain text at the top of the page.
Will a high score get me shortlisted?
It means the resume is easy for software and people to read and follows common good practice. Shortlisting also depends on your experience and the role.
