Password generator

Make a strong random password or an easy-to-type passphrase. It is created on your device with your browser’s secure random generator and is never sent anywhere.

Choose at least one kind of character.

Include

What makes a password strong?

Length and randomness. Each extra character multiplies the number of possibilities an attacker has to try, so a longer password beats a shorter one with clever substitutions. The strength shown is the number of bits of randomness: every extra bit doubles the work of guessing. Aim for 65 bits or more for accounts that matter.

Password or passphrase?

Random password
Shortest for its strength. Best when a password manager will remember and fill it for you.
Passphrase
Several random words. Longer, but far easier to type and remember: use one for the few passwords you must enter by hand, such as your password manager’s main password or your computer sign-in.

Is it safe to generate a password on a website?

Here the password is made by your own browser, using its cryptographic random generator (the same one used for secure connections). It is not sent to a server, saved, or logged, and this page loads no ads. If you prefer, load the page, disconnect from the internet, and generate it offline.

Good habits

  1. Use a different password for every account.
  2. Keep them in a password manager instead of a document or a note.
  3. Turn on two-step sign-in wherever it is offered.
