Document viewer
Open a Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF or CSV file and read it here, without Office installed. The file is opened in your browser and is never uploaded or changed.

- PDF.pdf
- Word.docx · .doc
- PowerPoint.pptx · .ppsx · .ppt
- Excel.xlsx · .xls · .xlsm · .ods
- Tables and text.csv · .tsv · .txt · .md · .json
What can it open?
- Every page as it was made, with zoom and page jumps. A locked PDF asks for its password.
- Word (.docx)
- The text with its headings, lists, tables, links and pictures, as one running page. Page breaks, headers, footers and exact fonts are not reproduced.
- PowerPoint (.pptx)
- Each slide laid out as designed, one at a time or all down the page. Animations, transitions and video are not shown.
- Excel (.xlsx, .xls, .ods)
- Every sheet as a grid with Excel’s row numbers and column letters, and a box to find text in it. Charts, pictures and colours are not shown.
- CSV, TSV, text, Markdown, JSON
- Tables as a grid, Markdown formatted, everything else as plain text.
- Old .doc and .ppt
- The text only. These formats from before 2007 cannot be laid out in a browser, so there are no pictures, tables or slide designs.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The file is read by your browser on your device and is never sent to Kernel’s servers. Nothing in a document can run code here, and pictures or links that point to the internet are not loaded, so opening a file does not tell anyone that you opened it. This page shows no ads.
Can I edit or convert the file?
No. This page only reads. Your file is not changed, and nothing is saved from it. To turn a document into a PDF, use Word to PDF, Excel to PDF or PowerPoint to PDF; for changes to a PDF, see the PDF tools.
Use it as an app
Install it from your browser’s menu (“Install” or “Add to Home screen”) and it opens in its own window and works without a connection.
- Windows, Mac and Linux (Chrome or Edge): right-click a document, choose Open with, then Kernel Document Viewer. Tick “Always” to make a double-click open it there. The browser asks once whether the app may open files.
- Android: from WhatsApp, Gmail or Files, tap Share and pick Kernel Document Viewer.
- iPhone and iPad: open the app and tap “Choose a document”. Apple does not let a home-screen app receive files from other apps.
Why does my document look different from Office?
Office lays a document out with its own fonts and rules, and no browser reproduces them exactly. This page aims to let you read what a file says, not to be a faithful print preview. For anything where the exact layout matters, such as a contract to sign, open the file in Office or ask for a PDF.
