How to play Carrom

Controls

Mouse
Move to aim. Hold the left button, pull back opposite the dotted line for power, then release to shoot.
Touch or pen
Start on the striker, pull opposite your intended shot, and release. More pull means more power; a tap never shoots.
Position
Drag the rail below the board to move along your baseline. Occupied positions are skipped.
Cancel a pull
Return to the starting point or press Escape. Leaving the tab also cancels a pull.
Keyboard
Expand Keyboard controls below the board. Tab to sliders and use arrow keys to adjust position, aim and power. Tab to Shoot, then press Enter or Space.
Pause
Local matches can pause; opening help or leaving the tab holds a moving shot or computer turn until Resume. Online matches continue for everyone while help is open.

The dotted line shows direction only; it does not predict rebounds.

How to win

White shoots from the bottom; Black shoots from the top. In solo games you play White and the computer plays Black. Local two-player games share one device. Pocket all nine of your own coins after the queen is covered to win. An own coin earns another shot; an opponent’s coin counts toward their total.

Board styles

Use Board in the top toolbar to choose Classic Wood, a seasonal table or an occasion design. The style is saved on this device when storage is available. Online players choose their own look; styles do not change the board size, coins, rules or difficulty. Local moving shots and computer turns pause while choosing; online matches keep running.

Four players and variants

Custom table supports two or four seats, each human or computer. In doubles, players 1 and 3 share White; players 2 and 4 share Black. Partners sit opposite. Turns go around all four sides; use the position rail and aim from the highlighted striker.

Classic uses the queen-cover rules below. Freestyle and Timed are house points variants: either colour scores for your team (White 20, Black 10, queen 50), with no queen cover required. Pocketing a coin keeps the turn. A striker foul returns that shot’s coins and deducts 10 points, down to zero. Highest team score wins when the board clears; Timed also ends after three minutes, once a moving shot settles. Equal scores draw.

Online multiplayer

Create a private room and share its code. The host starts with exactly two or four connected players. Online seats are human; four-player rooms use opposite partners. Turns have a 45-second limit, after which the computer takes one shot, including for disconnected players. Help and background tabs do not pause a shared match. Reconnect resumes your seat using this tab’s private credential. Empty rooms expire after two minutes; server restarts may end rooms. Only the host can start a rematch after a result.

Computer and tournament

Choose Easy, Medium or Hard for a single match. The computer uses geometric shot planning with difficulty-dependent search and aim/power error; it is not an optimal solver. It follows the same placement, physics, queen and foul rules as you.

The tournament has five rounds: Rookie, Club, Challenger, Master and Champion. Win a round to unlock the next. A loss keeps the current round available for retry. Completed rounds can be replayed. Progress saves on this device when browser storage is available; unfinished matches are not saved. New game restarts the current match without clearing unlocks.

Cover the queen

Pocket the red queen with an own coin in the same shot, or pocket an own coin on your very next shot. Miss the cover and the queen returns to the centre. A final coin pocketed before the queen is covered returns to the board.

Striker fouls

If you pocket the striker, your coins from that shot return, plus one earlier own coin if available. An uncovered queen from your turn returns too, and play passes.

These are casual rules, not an official competition ruleset. Local play stays on this device. Online play sends room membership and game actions to the multiplayer service; see the Privacy page.
